Win Streaks Halted By Washburn
ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's men's and women's tennis teams each saw their overall and conference win streaks halted by Washburn Saturday at the St. Joseph Tennis and Swim Club. The matches were moved from Maryville to the indoor facility due to weather.
Washburn's women, ranked 43rd nationally, edged Northwest 5-4, handing the Bearcats their first loss in seven matches and the team's first conference loss in 14 matches dating back to 2007.
Northwest (10-3, 6-1 MIAA) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and got straight set wins in singles play from Veronica Castilla and Erika Leston, who won their eighth and 13th consecutive head-to-head matches, respectively.
Washburn (9-2, 5-0) swept the first three singles matches and got the winning point at No. 6 doubles where Amanda Gayer beat Allison Wulff, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
The Bearcat men (10-4, 3-1) also jumped out to a 2-1 lead only to see the Ichabods (7-3, 3-0) sweep all six singles matches. Felipe Gennari lost a three-set match to Simon Blondin, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. Calvin Patterson lost a super-tiebreaker to Adam Rens at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.
The 28th-ranked Northwest men had won five consecutive matches and six straight in conference play dating back to last season. Washburn, ranked 34th nationally, has won its last two matches against Northwest dating back to last season's regional final.
