Sehgal, Castilla Named MIAA Athletes of the Week
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State tennis players Vijit Sehgal and Veronica Castilla have been named the MIAA Male and Female Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, for the period ended March 29. Both led their teams to 3-0 records last week.
Sehgal, a sophomore from Faridibad, India, went 3-0 in No. 3 singles and 2-1 in No. 1 doubles with partner Daniel Usieto last week. He and Usieto improved to 10-5 this season and are currently the 22nd-ranked doubles tandem in the nation.
Sehgal won all three singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-0 win against Nebraska-Kearney's Akihiro Sakai Tuesday and a 6-0, 6-1 win against Chase Petersen of Nebraska-Omaha Wednesday.
Castilla, a junior from Puertollano, Spain, was 3-0 in both No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles with partner Jordan Lipira. Castilla has won eight of her last nine singles matches, losing a total of 10 games in the eight wins. She's also won six of her last seven doubles matches.
Castilla swept Nebraska-Omaha's Samantha Thomas, 6-0, 6-0, Wednesday to help the Bearcats earn their 11th consecutive win in MIAA play dating back to last season. She also beat Nebraska-Kearney's Melissa Lyster and Missouri-St. Louis' Altanzul Gombo in straight sets.
It's the first such honor for Castilla, who is the first Bearcat to receive the weekly award this season. Sehgal earned the honor once last season and is the second Northwest men's player to receive the award in three weeks.
