Tennis Teams Push Win Streaks to Three
ST. LOUIS-Northwest Missouri State's men's and women's tennis teams capped their spring break trips with their third wins in as many days. The Bearcats traveled across the state to compete against Missouri-St. Louis and came away with 6-3 victories.
The 28th-ranked Northwest men (8-3) were spotted a 2-0 lead due to UMSL's five-man roster. The Tritons were forced to forfeit its No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches.
UMSL quickly tied the bout after taking both doubles matches. Peter Hantack and Alex Cherman became the first duo to beat Northwest's Felipe Gennari and Tony Adeyemi following a tightly contested No. 2 doubles match that ended at 9-7.
Northwest won four of five singles matches - each in straight sets - to secure the win. Gennari improved to 10-1 in dual meets with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Daniel Anthony at No. 2 singles.
The 39th-ranked Bearcat women (7-2) won two of three doubles matches and four of six singles duals to earn the win. Northwest doubles tandems Jordan Lipira and Veronica Castilla and Lina Gomez and Allison Wullf each picked up 8-2 wins. The Bearcats' four singles victories each came in straight sets.
Northwest's top player, Lina Gomez, dropped a three-set match to the Tritons' Pujitha Bandi. Scores went 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. UMSL earned its third point at No. 6 singles.
Bearcat freshmen Erika Leston continued her dominance at No. 5 singles, topping Katie Rynkiewich 6-1, 6-1. Leston is unbeaten in singles play this spring (9-0) and has won each match in straight sets.
