No. 28 Bearcats Split Against Nationally-Ranked Squads
MARYVILLE, Mo. - No. 28 Northwest Missouri State dropped a 6-3 match against 12th-ranked Cameron March 13 before flipping the score for a 6-3 win against No. 22 Southwest Baptist today. Northwest (4-1, 1-0 MIAA) remains undefeated in home MIAA matches dating back to 2007 and claimed it's largest margin of victory against the purple Bearcats (3-4, 1-1 MIAA) since 2001.
Northwest scored all three of it's points against Cameron (10-5), the top-ranked team in the South Central Region, on extended matches. Calvin Patterson and Tony Adeyemi prevented the Aggies from sweeping doubles with a 9-8 win at the No. 3 position against Carlos Viscarra and Daniel Bonamigo. Bonamigo suffered his loss second loss of the day at No. 6 singles to Ryan Westerhof in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.
The 'Battle of the Bearats' took an early shade of green after Northwest swept doubles action for a 3-0 lead. Daniel Usieto and Vigit Sehgal held off Martin Zsiga and Emilio ElAlabi at No. 1 doubles with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker to claim the point with a 9-8 match victory. Giovanni Auricchio rallied after dropping his first set at No. 4 singles 6-1 with a 6-4 win the second set. He claimed the match with 14-12 win the tiebreaker of the third set.
Up Next: Northwest faces it's third straight nationally-ranked opponent March 18 in No. 29 Midwestern State. The two will meet at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., at 2 p.m.
