Northwest Tennis Gets Wins on Opening Day

TOPEKA, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State's men's and women's tennis teams combined for three wins on the opening day of the 2009 spring season. Northwest's men's team beat Newman, 8-1, in the morning session and Southeastern Oklahoma State, 6-3, in the afternoon. The Bearcat women beat Newman 9-0.
The Northwest women didn't drop a set and lost just 13 games in singles play. Lina Gomez earned a 6-0, 6-0 win against Megan Lowe at No. 1 singles. Veronica Castilla and Brittney Browning earned 6-1, 6-0 victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Allison Wullf teamed with Gomez to earn an 8-2 win against Emily Gerber and Danielle Drouhard at No. 3 doubles. Northwest won 24 of the 33 games in doubles play.
The men's 22nd ranked doubles tandem of Daniel Usieto and Vigit Sehgal earned a pair of 8-2 victories to improve to 5-1 this season. Felipe Gennari and Ryan Westerhof teamed to win a pair of 8-4 decisions at No. 2 doubles.
Northwest combined for a 9-3 record in singles play Friday. All nine wins came in straight sets. Gennari, Westerhof and Calvin Patterson each scored a pair of straight set wins. Each lost just five games in two matches.
The Northwest men are back in action at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Missouri Valley. The Bearcat women next compete at home March 13 against Missouri Southern.
