Championship Sunday Marred By Injury
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Daniel Pazos of Cameron was two games away from winning an ITA regional championship when both of his legs cramped up. The pain never ceased and he lost the next five games and a third-set tiebreaker to Southwest Baptist's Marton Zsiga Sunday at the Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Championship hosted by Northwest Missouri State University.
Pazos had a 6-4, 4-1 lead against Zsiga when the pain began. He used his injury time and returned to the court, but couldn't run nor bend over while a somber crowd watched Zsiga rally for the win. Zsiga won the final eight points in a 10-2 third-set tiebreaker.
Pazos and teammate Diego Trojano also had to forfeit the championship doubles match. Pazos couldn't relieve the pain in his legs even with an hour break following singles play.
Abilene Christian's Ryan Hudson and Juan Nunez, the top seed of the doubles tournament, were crowned champions and along with Zsiga will represent the region at the national tournament to be played Oct. 16-19 in Mobile, Ala.
Pazos and Trojano began the morning with a 10-7, third-set tiebreaker against Zsiga and Emilio El Alabi to reach the doubles final. The match was suspended from Saturday due to darkness.
Pazos then beat Abilene Christian's Luke Hawk 6-2, 6-2 to reach the singles final against Zsiga, who upset top-seeded Nunez 6-4, 6-1.
