Four Singles Players; Three Doubles Teams Remain
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Abilene Christian stars Ryan Hudson and Juan Nunez continued their march to a regional championship Saturday in day two of the Wilson/ITA South Central Region Tennis Championships hosted by Northwest Missouri State University.
Nunez, the top seed in the singles bracket, beat St. Edward's Justin Raiti 6-1, 7-5 in the round of 16 and Southwest Baptist's Emilio El Alabi, 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 in the quarterfinals to reach the semis. He'll face SBU's Marton Zsiga, the four seed who won two matches in straight sets Saturday.
Cameron's Daniel Pazos and Abilene Christian's Luke Hawk will meet in the other semifinal. The two winners will play later in the day for the regional championship.
Darkness prevented the final doubles match from being played Saturday. Zsiga and El Alabi split sets with Cameron's Pazos and Diego Trojano. The two teams will play a third-set tiebreaker at 8:45 a.m. Sunday.
Waiting for the winner in the top half of the doubles bracket are Hudson and Nunez, who have yet to drop a set in three doubles matches this weekend.
Northwest's doubles tandem of Daniel Usieto and Vigit Sehgal advanced to the semfinals of the doubles bracket before losing to Hudson and Nunez, 7-6, 6-1.
Usieto lost a third-set tiebreaker to Abilene Christian's John Strahl Jr. in Northwest's only singles match Saturday.
