All But Two Seeds Advance Through Day One
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Five of seven seeds in the singles draw and all seven seeds of the doubles draw survived day one of the 2008 Wilson/ITA South Central Region Championships hosted by Northwest Missouri State University Sept. 26-28.
The singles field was cut from 55 to 16 on day one while 26 doubles tandems were cut to eight. Four singles players and two doubles teams will be all that remains through play on Saturday.
Abilene Christian has six singles players and two doubles teams remaining. Top seed Juan Nunez lost his first set of the tournament, but rebounded to beat Northwest's Ryan Westerhof to make the field of 16. Nunez and partner Ryan Hudson later earned a straight-set victory to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket.
Cameron has three singles players and two doubles teams left. Daniel Pazos, the three-seed of the singles' bracket won his match in straight sets. He and teammate Diego Trojano, the second seed of the doubles' bracket, also won in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals.
Both upsets came in singles play where Cameron's Cristian Easton upset fifth-seeded Bernard Lancaster of St. Edward's 6-4, 7-6 (2). Abilene Christian's Quinton Peterson-Paul took down sixth-seeded Andres Nunez of East Central Oklahoma 6-1, 7-5 to advance to day two.
Northwest's top singles player and top doubles tandem advanced to day two. Daniel Usieto, the seventh seed, beat Cameron's Thomas Piexoto 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 10-8 in his only singles match. He then teamed with Vigit Sehgal to earn two straight-set victories in doubles play. Usieto and Sehgal are seeded sixth in the doubles' bracket.
