Top Seeds Announced For Singles/Doubles

Singles Bracket (.pdf) | Doubles Bracket (.pdf)

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Abilene Christian junior Juan Nunez is the top seed in both the singles and doubles draws of the 2008 Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Tennis Championships hosted by Northwest Missouri State University Sept. 26-28.

The championships will take place at the Frank Grube Courts and High Rise Courts on campus and at Beal Park in downtown Maryville.

Nunez is a returning national qualifier from a year ago. He and teammate Ryan Hudson placed third in the national doubles tournament in 2007. Nunez nearly qualified in singles play, but lost to the top seed in the Central Region final.

Hudson is a late scratch from the singles tournament. The defending Lone Star Conference Player of the Year is battling illness this weekend, but will compete alongside Nunez in the doubles tournament.

Incarnate Word newcomer Francisco Segura is the second seed of the singles draw. Segura was a member of the Laredo Community College tennis team, which has won four consecutive NJCAA national championships.

Senior Daniel Pazos, who led Cameron to the LSC championship a year ago, is the three seed in the singles draw. Junior Martin Zsiga, who helped lead Southwest Baptist to the MIAA championship last year is the four seed.

Northwest senior Daniel Usieto was seeded seventh. Teammate Vigit Sehgal, who was named MIAA Freshman of the Year last spring, is on a collision course to meet Zsiga in the round of 16.

Usieto and Sehgal are the sixth seed in the doubles tournament. This is the first year the two have been matched together.

The three teams from the Lone Star Conference took the top three seeds in the doubles tournament. In addition to Nunez and Hudson, Cameron's Pazos and Diego Trojan are the two seed and the brother's tandem of Cristobal and Andres Nunez from East Central Oklahoma are the three seed.

Segura teams with Jose Arizpe to give Incarnate Word and the Heartland Conference the fourth seed. Zsiga and Emilio El Alabi give Southwest Baptist and the MIAA the fifth seed.

Matches are slated to begin at 9 a.m. Friday.
