Bearcats Defeat Emporia State to Advance to Regional Championship
MARYVILLE - Northwest Missouri State men's tennis swept doubles and picked up a 5-1 victory against Emporia State to advance to the finals of the NCAA North Central Regional. Both Bearcat tennis teams advance to the regional championship for the third straight season.
Jake Saulsbury and Giovanni Auricchio claimed the first Bearcat point with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, but Northwest needed tiebreakers in the final two matches to claim a doubles sweep. Felipe Gennari and Vigit Sehgal fought back from a 6-2 deficit to claim a 9-8 (9-7) win at No. 2 doubles, while Daniel Usieto and Lucas Ariboni used a 9-8 (7-2) win to defeat Julian Rios and Kent Grossling at No. 1 doubles.
Gennari put Northwest up 4-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. Usieto scored the winning point with a straight set win against Nathan Mai at No. 3 singles.
Up Next: The Bearcats play Washburn tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at the Frank Grube Courts on the Northwest campus. The winner advances to the NCAA National Tournament in Houston, Texas.
