Bearcat Women Upset Washburn in 5-3 Victory to Advance to NCAA National Championships
TOPEKA, Kan. - ( W 5-3) The Northwest Missouri State women's tennis team handed Washburn its second loss of the season in a 5-3 win over the Lady Blues in the NCAA North Central Regional final in Topeka, Kan., this afternoon. The Bearcats advance to their fifth straight NCAA National Tournament appearance and improve to 15-7. Washburn ends its season at 20-2.
Northwest fell behind early with a 8-1 loss at No. 1 doubles, as freshman Lisa Pendrak and junior Carolina Amaral fell to Diana Goldsmith and Julie Huyberechts. The Bearcats evened the team score at one with a 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles from sophomore Jordan Lipira and freshman Veronica Castilla. Northwest took a 2-1 advantage at the end of the doubles competition as sophomores Lina Gomez and Emily Lindsay defeated Lisa Coleman and Audrie Miller 9-8 (7-2) at No. 3 doubles.
Washburn's Goldsmith brought the match back to 2-2 in straight set wins over Lindsay 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. The Lady Blues moved to a 3-2 advantage after Huyberechts defeated Amaral 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 singles. Castilla defeated Miller at the No. 4 position 6-3, 6-1 to tie the team scores at three. Pendrak won her third set at No. 6 singles to take the match 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 over Allie Gardner and Lipira won the last two sets to defeat Lauren Harris 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to secure the Bearcat victory.
Northwest remains as one of 16 teams in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships. The national tournament will being on May 9 in Altamonte Springs, Fla., with the Bearcats taking on Hawaii-Pacific.
NOTES: The Bearcats improve to 15-7 all-time in the NCAA Regionals and 18-12 in the NCAA postseason ... Northwest is now 6-3 in the second round of the NCAA regionals ... The win avenged a 5-4 loss suffered in the regular season finale on April 19 in Maryville, Mo. ... The Bearcats are now 13-9 against Washburn all-time and 2-0 when the two meet in the postseason ... Lipira has won the last nine matches at No. 5 singles and has paired with Castilla to win the past 12 matches at No. 2 doubles.
