Bearcats Place 11 on All-MIAA Squads; Castilla Named Women's Freshman of the Year

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Northwest Missouri State claimed 11 All-MIAA accolades between men's and women's squads, including the women's Freshman of the Year Veronica Castilla in a unanimous selection. The Bearcat men finished second in the MIAA Tournament on April 21-22, while the women secured fifth.

The men placed four on the first team, the most since 2004. The Bearcats were lead by unanimous selections at No. 2 doubles with senior Pablo Acebedo and sophomore Daniel Usieto and at No. 5 singles with junior Lucas Ariboni. Junior Jake Saulsbury picked up All-MIAA first team honors at No. 6 singles. Saulsbury also placed on the second team at No. 1 doubles with partner senior Chris Smith and Ariboni was mentioned on the second team with freshman Felipe Gennari at No. 3 doubles. Smith earned second-team No. 3 singles recognition while Acebedo picked up a No. 2 singles nod. Usieto garnered accolades at No. 1 singles on the honorable mention squad while Gennari was named honorable mention at No. 4 singles.

Castilla earned the second straight freshman award for Northwest, after sophomore Jordan Lipira picked up Co-Freshman of the Year honors last season. Castilla placed on the All-MIAA second team at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles with partner Lipira. Lipira was the lone Bearcat on the first team, gaining honors at No. 5 singles. Freshman Lisa Pendrak earned second-team honors at No. 6 singles, and sophomores Lina Gomez and Emily Lindsay rounded out the second-team with the No. 3 doubles award.

Both Northwest teams will be in action on May 3 in the NCAA North Central Regional Tournament. The No. 4-seeded women face No. 5 seed North Dakota at 9 a.m. in Topeka, Kan. The men grabbed the No. 2 seed and host one of two regional pods, competing against St. Cloud (Minn.) State at 2 p.m.
