Northwest Tennis Splits with Nationally Ranked Washburn Squads

MARYVILLE - ( Men W 5-4) ( Women L 4-5) The No. 35 Northwest Missouri State men's tennis team pulled the upset in a 5-4 victory over No. 22 Washburn at the Frank Grube and High Rise Courts this afternoon. The women dropped a 5-4 decision to No. 25 Washburn.

The men improve to 12-5 and 4-0 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The win today secures the Bearcats at No. 1 seed and first-round bye in the MIAA Tournament this weekend in St. Joseph, Mo. The women drop to 11-6 and 4-2 in conference action. The Washburn men move to 14-2 and 2-2 in MIAA play while the Lady Blues remain perfect with a 17-0 mark and 7-0 record in the the MIAA.

Sophomore Daniel Usieto and senior Pablo Acebedo helped the Bearcats to a 2-1 advantage after doubles play by defeating Brad Johnston and Nathan Martin 7-4 in the tiebreaker to win No. 2 doubles 9-8. Senior Chris Smith and junior Jake Saulsbury recorded their first win over a regionally-ranked opponent, defeating Rutger Vliegenberg and Andrew Plum 8-5 in No. 1 doubles.

In singles action, Acebedo defeated Drew Hanson 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 and Smith took the last two of a three-set match over Nate Martin 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Junior Lucas Ariboni provided the winning point at No. 5 singles, defeating Johnson 6-2, 7-5, for the Bearcats second win over a top-40 team this season.

Freshman Veronica Castilla and sophomore Jordan Lipira won their eighth straight match at No. 2 doubles, defeating Amber Raindl and Lauren Harris 8-5 to provide Northwest with a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. The Lady Blues swept the first three singles matches and won at No. 6 singles for the 5-4 victory. Lipira continued her six match winning streak at No. 5 singles in a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lauren Harris.

Both Northwest teams will co-host the MIAA Tennis Tournament this weekend at St. Joseph, Mo., on April 21-22 at the Noyes Tennis Complex and St. Joseph Tennis and Swim Club. The bracket and times will be released tomorrow (April 20) evening following the completion of the regular season conference schedule.
