Men Suffer 5-3 Loss to East Central; Women Win Third Straight in 6-3 Win Over Harding

MARYVILLE - ( Men 5-3 L vs. ECU) ( Women 6-3 W vs. HU) The Northwest women handed Harding (Ark.) its first loss in nine matches in a 6-3 defeat to open the Northeastern (Okla.) State Quadrangular in Tahlequah, Okla., today. The No. 35 Bearcat men lost for the first time in nine matches 5-3 to East Central (Okla.) in Tulsa, Okla.

The women, ranked third regionally in the ITA/FILA rankings released today, improve to 9-5 for the third straight win. Harding drops to 18-3. The men drop to 10-4 while East Central moves to 6-7.

The Bearcat women swept doubles, with sophomores Lina Gomez and Emily Lindsay providing the largest margin of victory in a 8-1 win in No. 3 doubles over Katherine Golik and Denise Pascuzzi. The Lady Bison claimed the top two singles wins in two sets. Freshman Lisa Pendrak won No. 6 singles in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Pascuzzi for her third straight win in the position.

Northwest won two out of three doubles matches, with sophomore Daniel Usieto and senior Pablo Acebedo winning their eighth straight at No. 2 doubles 8-6 over Chris Kriel and Victor Rios. Senior Chris Smith was the only Bearcat to win in singles action, claiming a 6-4, 6-4 win over Cristobal Nunez in No. 3 singles for his fifth consecutive win in that position.

The women continue action tomorrow against two nationally ranked teams in the NSU Quadrangular. Northwest will take on host No. 13 Northeastern (Okla.) State tomorrow at 9 a.m. followed by No. 26 Midwestern (Texas) State at 2 p.m.

NOTES: Northwest has won six of the past seven women's matches ... The men remain No. 2 in the North Central Region ITA/FILA rankings released today ... The men's loss is the first since losing 5-4 on March 12 against Midwestern (Texas) State ... Three Northwest men were ranked regionally in the ITA/FILA singles rankings released today: 6. Acebedo, 9. Usieto, 12. Smith.
