Men Win Seventh Straight in Northwest Sweep of Baker
KANSAS CITY - ( Men 7-2 W) ( Women 8-1 W) The No. 34 Northwest Missouri State men's tennis team continued its winning streak, winning its seventh consecutive in a 7-2 victory over Baker (Kan.) at the Plaza Tennis Courts in Kansas City, Mo. The women swept singles action in a 8-2 win over Baker.
Northwest men improve to 10-3 overall while the women improve to 8-5. The Wildcat men drop to 3-7 and the women fall to 6-4 on the season.
Senior Pablo Acebedo and sophomore Daniel Usieto paired for the only win in doubles action, defeating Martin Renteria and Trevor Hedberg 8-6. The Bearcats swept singles action, with Acebedo winning his eighth straight at No. 2 singles and junior Jake Saulsbury winning his 10th straight at No. 6 singles.
The women won five singles matches in two sets and one by default to sweep singles for the fourth time this season. Junior Carolina Amaral and freshman Lisa Pendrak suffered their first loss at No. 1 doubles in four matches, falling 8-2 to Kelsey Stephens and Marti Eldson of Baker.
Both teams head to Oklahoma for a weekend of matches. The men will take on East Central (Okla.) on April 6 at 3 p.m., while the women participate in the Northeastern (Okla.) State Quadrangular, facing Harding (Ark.) first at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
NOTES: The men's six-match winning streak is the longest since a 10-match win streak to open the 2004 season ... All three singles sweeps for the men have occurred in the past three matches, and is the longest such streak since available records begin in 2004 ... The men improve to 18-6 against Baker and have won the past four matches against the Wildcats ... The women are 7-0 when winning No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles this season.
