Northwest Tennis Sweeps MIAA Weekly Honors
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Senior Pablo Acebedo and junior Carolina Amaral were honored as Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tennis Athletes of the Week, announced today by the league offices.
It is the fourth career honor for Acebedo and his second in as many weeks. It is the first such career accolade for Amaral. It's the first time the Bearcats have swept the MIAA weekly honors since April 11, 2006
Acebedo went undefeated in No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles last week, assisting the No. 34 Bearcats to wins over Southwest Baptist and Nebraska-Kearney. Acebedo contributed to two of the points in a 5-4 win over Southwest Baptist on March 20, winning 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 in No. 2 singles over Emilio El Alabi and teamed with sophomore Daniel Usieto to win in No. 2 doubles 8-4. The win over SBU was the first against a ranked opponent since 2004 and the first against the purple Bearcats since 2002.
He won in two sets, 7-6, 6-1 over Luke Backhaus in No. 2 singles on March 24 against Nebraska-Kearney. Acebedo and Usieto won 8-4 in No. 2 doubles to push the Bearcats to a 5-2 win against the Lopers.
Amaral was undefeated in No. 2 singles and went 1-1 in No. 1 doubles last week. Pairing with freshman Lisa Pendrak for the first time this season in doubles, the two lost the first match 9-8 (7-5) against Southwest Baptist, but rebounded with a 8-2 victory over McKenna Irwin and Claire Bryan of Nebraska-Kearney. In singles competition, Amaral won 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 over Chelsey Janzen of SBU and took the No. 2 singles match against Nebraska-Kearney in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Acebedo and Amaral will join their teammates tomorrow, as the Bearcats welcome Rockhurst for a 3 p.m. match at the Frank Grube and High Rise Courts.
