Northwest Tennis Squads Sweep Nebraska-Kearney
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- ( Men W 5-2) ( Women W 8-0)The No. 34 Northwest Missouri State men's tennis won its fourth straight match in a 6-2 decision over Nebraska-Kearney this evening at the St. Joseph Tennis and Swim Club. The women claimed its third consecutive win in the season's first shutout in an 8-0 victory over the Lopers. The men improve to 7-3 and the women move to 6-4 on the season.
All four singles matches played to completion for the men were decided in two sets. Senior Pablo Acebedo, ranked No. 9 in the latest North Central singles rankings (March 23), won his fifth straight match at No. 2 singles, defeating Luke Backhaus 7-6, 6-1. Junior Jake Saulsbury moved to 7-0 at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Noriaki Naruse. Junior Lucas Ariboni and freshman Felipe Gennari recorded the largest margin of victory in doubles, winning the No. 3 match 8-3 over Backhaus and Drew Mercier.
Freshman Lina Gomez and sophomore Emily Lindsay won the team's fifth straight match in No. 3 doubles with a 8-1 victory over Amanda Longly and Callie Erickson. Lindsay, named the No. 9 singles player in the latest regional rankings (March 23), defeated Kristen Messbarger, No. 13 in the region, 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles.
Both teams will be in action again on March 28, when Rockhurst travels to Maryville, Mo., for a 3 p.m. match.
NOTES: The men moved to No. 34 in the latest ITA/FILA national rankings and No. 2 in the North Central regional rankings released March 23 ... The national ranking is the highest since equaling the mark in the March 10, 2004 rankings ... The four match winning streak by the men is the longest since a five-match streak to open the 2005 season (March 4-11) ... The 8-0 shutout by the women was the first shutout since May 4, 2006, when the Bearcats won 5-0 over Truman State in the NCAA Regional Semifinals.
