Bearcat Women Win Home Opener 8-1 over Missouri Western
MARYVILLE, Mo. - ( W 8-1) The Northwest Missouri State women's tennis team moved to 3-0 on the season in a 8-1 victory over Missouri Western in the 2007 home opener this afternoon. The Bearcats also improve to 1-0 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) play. The Griffons drop to 1-3 and 0-1 in the MIAA.
Northwest swept the doubles matches, led in the No. 1 match by junior Carolina Amaral and sophomore Lina Gomez. The duo won 8-2 over Mary Pankiewicz and Tammy Liebersbach. The Bearcats won five singles matches in two sets. Gomez won by the largest margin of victory in singles play, defeating Mary Pankiewicz 6-1, 6-0. Amaral, ranked 10th regionally in the ITA/FILA preseason singles poll, dropped her No. 2 match, losing to Liebersbach 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 and 12-10 in the third set tiebreaker.
The women head to Springfield, Mo., for a pair of weekend matches. Northwest will play No. 10 Drury (Mo.) on March 10 at 9 a.m., followed by Cowley (Kan.) College at 2 p.m.
