Northwest Tennis Teams Remain Undefeated Through Opening Weekend Matches
TOPEKA, Kan. - ( Men 5-0 W CSU-P) ( Women 8-1 W CSU-P) ( Men 5-0 W MSC) The No. 40 Northwest Missouri State men's tennis team remained undefeated in victories over Colorado State-Pueblo and Mesa (Colo.) State College to close out the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC)/Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Invitational this weekend. The Bearcat women won their only match yesterday 8-1 over Colorado State-Pueblo. The women's match with Winona (Minn.) State was cancelled due to poor travel conditions.
The men shutout CSU-P 5-0, sweeping the doubles competition and winning the only two singles matches played to completion. Senior Chris Smith and junior Jake Saulsbury rebounded from a loss in No. 1 doubles on Friday to win over Ricardo Oaxaca and Beau Freszuez 8-3. Junior Lucas Ariboni defeated Mike Joyce 6-0, 6-1 in his first career appearance at No. 3 singles.
The women won all six singles matches, winning five in two sets. Freshman Veronica Castilla shutout Tiffany Talmadge 6-0, 6-0 in No. 5 singles in the largest margin of victory for the women in singles competition. Castilla and sophomore Lina Gomez remained undefeated on the season in No. 1 doubles, winning 8-4 over Jamie Raun and Ashley Erickson.
The Northwest men improved to 3-0 on the season with a 5-0 win over Mesa State. Ariboni and freshman Fliepe Gennari won their third No. 3 doubles match of the season, defeating Niko Carrizo and Cory Rockow 8-1. The two were the only ones to play in a finished singles match, with Ariboni taking No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2 and Gennari winning No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-0.
Northwest will open the 2007 women's home schedule on March 7, hosting Missouri Western in a 3 p.m. match. Both teams will travel to Springfield, Mo., this weekend in matches hosted by Drury University.
