Bearcat Tennis Wins 2007 Openers Against Metro State

TOPEKA, Kan. - ( Men 5-4 W) ( Women 5-1 W) Both Northwest Missouri State tennis teams started out the 2007 spring season with wins over Metropolitan State College of Denver this morning at the Wood Valley Racquet Club in Topeka, Kan. The No. 40 men won 5-4 over the Roadrunners and the women took a 5-1 decision against Metro State. Both teams are participating in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC)/Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Invitational that continues through March 3.

The men were led in singles competition by senior Pablo Acebedo in a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Riley Meyer in the No. 2 match. Junior Lucas Ariboni took three sets to defeat Mark Miler 4-6, 7-6, 12-10. Ariboni paired with freshman Fliepe Gennari for the lone doubles victory in the No. 3 slot, defeating Sean Carlton and David Scott 9-8.

Northwest swept the doubles competition with the largest margin of victory in No. 3 doubles from freshman Gina Pendrak and sophomore Jordan Lipira winning 8-1 over Katie Reita and Orzalla Nabiyar. In only three singles matches played, the Bearcats won in No. 2 singles with sophomore Lina Gomez over April Hirad 4-6, 6-0, 10-5. Lipira won the No. 3 singles match 6-4, 6-2 over Alecia Jenkins.

The Bearcats continue play at the RMAC/MIAA Invitational tomorrow with both teams playing Colorado State-Pueblo at 12 noon. The teams will split the final match of the day, with the men playing Mesa (Colo.) State and the women playing Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) member Winona (Minn.) State. Both of the final matches begin at 3 p.m.
