Smith and Saulsbury Prepare for ITA National Small College Championships
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State men's tennis will send the duo of senior Chris Smith and junior Jake Saulsbury to Fort Myers, Fla., for competition in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Tournament on Oct. 12-15. The tandem won the ITA North Central Regional title on Oct. 1, and will face Central Region champions Brett Emerson and Zach Dillard of Midwestern (Texas) State. It will be the first appearance for the Northwest men at the ITA National Tournament in school history.
"The competition will be tough," commented head tennis coach Mark Rosewell. "We're going down to play as hard as we can."
Florida Gulf Coast University will serve as the host site for the third consecutive year, hosting championships for Division II, Division III, NAIA, and Junior Colleges. Champions from each Division will play one another on Friday and Saturday, with the overall champion receiving a wild card bid into the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, hosted by Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio on Nov. 2-5.
The ITA is the governing body of collegiate tennis and promotes the athletic and academic achievements of collegiate tennis. The ITA Small College Championships began in 1986, and are the only national tournaments for singles and doubles at the NCAA Division II level.
