Smith and Saulsbury Win ITA Regional Title; SBU's Kacamakis is the Singles Winner; Players Advance to Championships in Florida
MARYVILLE, Mo. - ( draw sheets) The Northwest Missouri State men's tennis duo of senior Chris Smith and junior Jake Saulsbury defeated teammates senior Pablo Acebedo and sophomore Daniel Usieto to win the 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) North Central Regional doubles championship, this afternoon on the campus of Northwest. An all-Northwest doubles final went in favor of the eighth-seeded Smith and Saulsbury by a count of 8-4 - Acebedo and Usieto held the No. 3 seed. Southwest Baptist's No. 11 seed Alex Kacamakis defeated No. 13 seed Agustin Mollar from SBU, 6-2, 6-2 in the singles final. The three regional champions now move on to the 2006 ITA Small College Championships on Oct. 12-15 at Fort Myers, Fla.
In the semifinal singles' round, played earlier today, Mollar took down Smith from Northwest, 6-1, 6-7 and 7-6 (10-8) while Kacamakis was victorious over the field's top seed, Rutger Vliegenburg from Washburn, 6-7, 6-2, 12-10.
The ITA is the governing body of collegiate tennis and promotes the athletic and academic achievements of collegiate tennis. The ITA Small College Championships began in 1986, and are the only national tournaments for singles and doubles at the NCAA Division II level.
