Men's Tennis Hosts North Central ITA Regional Tournament
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State men's tennis will be one of 61 schools to host the 2006 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament on Sept. 29-Oct. 1. It will mark the 16th consecutive year Northwest has hosted either an ITA regional event. Sixty-four athletes from 11 schools from the North Central Region will compete in singles and doubles competition, with regional champions moving on to the ITA National Small College Championships on Oct. 12-15 in Fort Myers, Fla.
"We should have a couple guys seeded for this weekend," said head coach Mark Rosewell. " Pablo Acebedo and Chris Smith in singles, and then the doubles team of Acebedo and Daniel Usieto."
Competition will take place at the Frank Grube Courts and High Rise Courts on the Northwest Missouri State campus, and at the tennis courts at Beal Park in Maryville, Mo. Action on Friday and Saturday will begin at 9:00 a.m. Finals are scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Grube Courts on Sun, Oct. 1.
Last year, Acebedo advanced to the quarterfinals in singles competition, falling to eventual regional champion Peter Grimsey 6-3, 6-3. In doubles action, Acebedo and Smith received the No. 1 seed, but lost in the quarterfinals to Schultz and Rivera of Colorado-Colorado Springs 8-5.
The ITA is the governing body of collegiate tennis and promotes the athletic and academic achievements of collegiate tennis. The ITA Small College Championships began in 1986, and are the only national tournaments for singles and doubles at the NCAA Division II level.
