Bearcats Advance to Regional Final With 5-0 Win Over Truman; Set to Face Emporia on Friday at 10 a.m.
MARYVILLE, Mo. - At the North Central Region Semifinals today at Grube Courts, No. 1 Northwest Missouri State women's tennis shut out No. 8 Truman State for the second time this season, 5-0. Northwest, who serves as host for the Tournament, will play No. 4 Emporia State on Friday morning at 10 a.m. in the Regional Championship.
Northwest improves to 19-3 overall while Truman ends its season at 14-8.
Northwest stood strong through doubles with the closest match coming at No. 2. Sophomore Carolina Amaral, along with freshman Emily Lindsay, took down Courtney Walther and Lindsy Blair 8-6. Two-time MIAA MVP Gena Lindsay bounced back from her first and only defeat of 2006 last Friday with a 6-1, 6-1 No 1. singles win over Jennifer Salmon. Freshman Lina Gomez ended competition with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Whitney Hamilton.
In the late Semifinal match between Emporia and No. 5 Washburn, the Hornets fought back after dropping two of three doubles. ESU's lone loss in singles play was at No. 4 in three sets - Amber Raindl legging out a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win over Hornet Karly Schultz. With the score in favor of Emporia 4-3, No. 5 singles player Annie Booth held serve with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Allie Gardner and send ESU to a date with the Bearcats.
Northwest recently toppled Emporia 5-3 in the MIAA Semifinals on April 22 and stand 2-0 against the Hornets this season.
Washburn ends its season 13-10 overall while Emporia stands at 17-6 entering Saturday's final.
NOTE: In other regional action on the men's side, the Northwest men will travel to Topeka, Kan., and Washburn University for the North Central Regional on May 5-6 from the Washburn Tennis Courts. The Bearcats, who earned the No. 3 seed, will face No. 6 Metro (Colo.) State at 9 a.m. on Friday. First-round winners will face off at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The rain site is Wood Valley Racquet Club.
