Women's Tennis Wins First MIAA Title Since 2003; Men Fall 5-1 to Washburn
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State women's tennis team defeated Missouri Southern 5-0 to clinch their first MIAA Conference title since 2003 at the Noyes Tennis Complex today in St. Joseph, Mo. The men fell 5-1 to Washburn, their second consecutive runner-up finish in the conference tournament.
The women played two singles matches to completion, with senior Gena Lindsay winning her 28th consecutive No. 1 singles match against Missouri Southern's Michelle Hall 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Lena Gomez defeated Kim McMunn 6-1, 6-3 in No. 4 singles. Sophomore Carolina Amaral and freshman Emily Lindsay defeated Kristen Meschede and McMunn 8-4 in No.2 doubles.
Sophomores Lucas Ariboni and Henrique Tomaz earned the Bearcat men's only win by defeating Tyler Kinder and Blake Edwards in No. 3 doubles 8-6. Junior Pablo Acedbado took three sets to fall in No. 1 singles, losing to Rutger Vliegenberg 6-3, 2-6, 1-6.
The women will be in action against Drury University (Mo.) in Kansas City, Mo., on April 28. The Northwest men's and women's teams are ranked number one in the latest North Central regional poll, and will await their postseason schedule to be announced on Wed., April 28.
