Northwest Tennis Advances to MIAA Finals
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Both Northwest Missouri State tennis teams advanced to the finals of the 2006 MIAA Tennis Championships, held at the Noyes Tennis Complex in St. Joseph, Mo. The men defeated Truman State 5-0, and the women were victorious against Emporia State 5-3. Both Bearcat tennis teams are ranked number one in the North Central region.
For the men against Truman, only two singles matches were played to completion. Junior Pablo Acebedo defeated Tyler Wood 6-3, 6-3, in No. 1 singles play, and sophomore Henrique Tomaz won against Brad Martin 6-1, 6-1, in No 2. singles. Northwest swept all three doubles sets, with sophomore Lucas Ariboni and senior Zack Keith blanking Truman 8-0 in No. 3 doubles.
Senior Gena Lindsay kept her No. 1 singles streak intact, winning 6-3Lena Gomez, 6-1 over Emporia State's Marcela Bayon for the 28th consecutive match. Freshmen Jordan Lipira and won their No. 3 doubles set 8-0 against Annie Booth and Tayla Quick.
The Northwest men's team will play Washburn at 11 a.m., on Sunday, and are looking for their first MIAA championship title since 2002. The women, who last won the conference championship in 2003, will take on Missouri Southern at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
