Keith and Lindsay Named MIAA Tennis Players of Week

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.-Two Northwest Missouri State seniors swept the tennis portion of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Players of the Week as Zach Keith (Chillicothe, Mo.) and Gena Lindsay (St. Joseph, Mo.) were honored with the award, announced today by the MIAA offices. It is the first such award for Keith this year while it is Lindsay's third overall.

Keith, a 5-foot-10 athlete for the 8-6 Bearcats, was 3-0 in singles and 3-1 in No. 3 doubles as Northwest went 2-2 last week.

He and doubles partner sophomore Lucas Ariboni defeated Adam Albertson and Rich Henschel of Quincy (Ill.), 8-2, before Keith downed Albertson in No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1. It was his first match of the season in the No. 5 singles spot.

Going back to his usual No. 6 singles slot, Keith accounted for two of the Bearcats' four wins in a 5-4 setback at Rockhurst (Mo.) Wednesday (April 5). He and Ariboni survived for a 9-7 win over Adam Riccuri and Ryan Field in doubles, then Keith dispatched Field in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

In a 5-4 loss to St. Cloud (Minn.) State Friday (April 7), Keith and Ariboni lost their doubles match to Kevin Lukens and Kristopher Johnson, 8-3. Keith bounced back for a 6-3, 6-3 No. 6 win over Lukens.

Keith only played doubles in a 9-0 win over Minnesota State-Mankato Saturday (April 8), teaming with sophomore Henrique Tomas for an 8-0 win against Ryan Fredrickson and John Julian.

The graduate of Chillicothe High School is 8-0 in singles play this year and 10-4 at No. 3 doubles. Keigh joins Acebedo as Northwest players to win the award this year - Acebedo accomplished the feat on March 28.

Lindsay increased her No. 1 singles winning streak to 25 dating back to 2005 with a pair of wins last week for the top regional team. Northwest stands 13-0 on the year with wins over Rockhurst on April 5 and St. Cloud State (Minn.) on April 8.

Lindsay's string of straight-set wins in singles this season was extended to 12 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kristin Davis of Rockhurst (Mo.) and a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kelley Severson of St. Cloud.

She was 1-1 in doubles with fellow senior Erica Ramirez -- falling to RU's Heather Reiner and Kandice Belanger, 8-6, before bouncing back to defeat SCSU's Severson and Kimberly Lindblom, 8-4.

Lindsay, No. 1 regionally and No. 31 nationally in the Fila/ITA Division II singles rankings, is a graduate of Central High School. Lindsay was the Player of the Week on March 21 & 28.

The Bearcat men and women travel to Washburn tomorrow (Wednesday) for a 3 p.m. start.
