Squads Split at St. Cloud State; Men Defeat Minnesota State
MANKATO, Minn. - The Northwest Missouri state women's tennis team remained unbeaten at 13-0 for the year with a 9-0 win over St. Cloud State this morning. The men lost 5-4 to St. Cloud State on April 7 and won 9-0 against Minnesota State-Mankato this morning to improve to 8-6 on the season.
Junior Pablo Acebado (Barcelona, Spain) won the No. 2 singles competition 6-3, 6-3 against St. Cloud's Michael Engdahl. Junior Chris Smith (Johannesburg, S. Africa), sophomore Lucas Ariboni (San Pablo, Brazil), and senior Zach Keith (Chillicothe, Mo.) were also victorious in singles competition on Friday. The men lost all three doubles matches, the first time this season since March 10, 2006, against Cameron (Okla.).
Against Minnesota State-Mankato today, Acebado defeated Mike Belisie in No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2. In the top doubles competition, Acaebado and Smith won 8-2 against Belisie and Drew Stein of Minnesota State.
On the women's side, senior Gena Lindsay (St. Joseph, Mo.) won her 25th straight No. 1 singles match against St. Cloud's Kelley Serverson 6-1, 6-3. Lindsay has won all but one singles match this year in two sets, the exception coming from the first match this season against Winona State on March 3. In No. 1 doubles, Lindsay and senior Erica Ramirez (St. Petersburg, Fla.) defeated Severson and Kimberly Lindblom 8-4.
The women will be in action at home on April 11 against Nebraska-Omaha. Matches are set to begin at 4 p.m. Both teams will be on the road April 12, taking on Washburn at 3 p.m.
