Lindsay and Ramirez Win Top Honors at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's Midwest Region Championships

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- In the third and final day of the Wilson / Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) North Central Region Championships hosted by Northwest Missouri State, Northwest seniors Gena Lindsay (St. Joseph, Mo.) and Erica Ramirez (St. Petersburg, Fla.) defended their 2004 regional titles as they were crowned singles and doubles champions this afternoon at Frank Grube courts. Lindsay defeated second-seed Marcela Bayon from Emporia State in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 in the singles championship. Lindsay then teamed up with Ramirez to take down Michelle Hall and Barb Gombosi from Missouri Southern 9-7 to win the doubles title.

Lindsay's title match was the toughest competition she faced. In her four matches leading up to the final round, Lindsay breezed through allowing just a combined four games. In the semifinal match, Lindsay did not allow a game to her opponent defeating Gombosi 6-0, 6-0.

The same could be said of how Lindsay and Ramirez earned their second straight doubles hardware. After a 8-0 blanking of Staggenborg and Caras from Fort Hays State in round one, the duo allowed just two games in each of their next three matches.

Lindsay and Ramirez now advance to the ITA National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla. on Oct. 13-16. Last season at the national meet, Lindsay took seventh-place honors while the Lindsay/Ramirez tandem finished eighth overall.
