Women's Tennis Heads to Nationals; Faces Columbus State in Opening Round on Wednesday
MARYVILLE, Mo . -- Heading to its third straight NCAA Division II National Tournament, the Northwest Missouri State women's tennis team faces No. 8 Columbus State (Ga.) on Wednesday, May 11. First-round action among the nation's top 16 programs begins on Wednesday and runs through Saturday at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Northwest faces Columbus State at 1:30 p.m. EST. The Tournament is hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and the Sunshine State Conference.
"It is definitely an accomplishment and something I am very happy about," said 21-year head coach Mark Rosewell. "I thought we played real well last weekend and now we are one of the 16 best teams in the country. But, Columbus State will be a difficult match as they are ranked No. 8 in the country."
Northwest advanced by defeating the North Central Region's top seed and host Emporia State 5-1 on May 6 in the regional championship. Standing at 18-10 on the season, the Bearcats boast the region's top No. singles player and No. 1 doubles duo. Junior Gena Lindsay earned MIAA Player of the Year honors as she went 20-3 at No. 1 singles. Lindsay teams with junior Erica Ramirez to go 15-5 at the top doubles spot.
For the second consecutive year, the CSU Cougars defeated the University of North Florida in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship on May 7.
The winner of Thursday's matches compete on Friday in the single elimination format.
