Women's Tennis Defeats St. Cloud in Regionals
EMPORIA, Kan. -- (
stats) The Northwest Missouri State women's tennis team continued its season with a 5-0 blanking of No. 5 seed St. Cloud State this afternoon at the North Central Regionals, hosted by Emporia State. Northwest, who moves to 17-10 on the year, will face the winner of Emporia and Mesa State tomorrow at 11 a.m. The victor in tomorrow's regional championship earns a trip to the 24th annual NCAA Division II National Tournament in Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. May 11-14.
No. 1 singles player
Gena Lindsay, hobbled by a knee injury suffered Monday, won her fifth straight and improved to 19-3 on the season with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Nicole Lechner. The other singles play completed was at No. 5 with
Raven Herner. She notched her club-best 20th win of 2005 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jenna Vogel.
The region's No. 1-ranked doubles team in Lindsay and
Erica Ramirez toppled Lechner and Kelley Severson at 8-3. Also,
Carolina Amaral and
Danielle Cartier got past Sara Eull and Laura Klein 8-5 at No. 2 and
Raven Herner and
Amanda Hardie were victorious over Vogel and Kimberly Lindblom at No. 3.
The Bearcats are in their 11th straight Regional Tournament having advanced to Nationals last season.
