Women's Tennis Squads Gears up for Regionals
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Entering its 11th straight NCAA North Central Regional Tournament, all under 21-year veteran coach Mark Rosewell, the Northwest Missouri State women's tennis team earned the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 seed St. Cloud State on Thursday, May 5. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. at top seed Emporia State. All doubles and #1-#4 singles matches will be played at the George Milton Courts while the #5-#6 singles will be at the Emporia Country Club.
"It's quite fortunate for us," said head coach Mark Rosewell. "It was one of our team goals to reach regionals. A lot of teams would be happy just to get there (regionals) once. It feels good to go again this year."
The Bearcats stand 15-9 overall, including a third-place victory over Missouri Southern in the MIAA Tournament. Since the current format of regional play began in 1995 and the top eight seeds in the region advance, the Bearcats have reached the postseason every year. Last season, Northwest was North Central Region champions as the host and advanced to the national tournament. The 'Cats finished 20-11 to notch 20-plus wins for the sixth time under Rosewell.
Junior Gena Lindsay, who picked up MIAA Most Valuable Player honors and First-Team laurels for the second straight year, suffered a knee injury on Monday in practice. She is scheduled to compete on Thursday. Lindsey is ranked No. 1 in the North Central Region and No. 38 in the ITA singles list (Apr. 11). She teams up with junior Erica Ramirez at No. 1 doubles to rank first in the Region and No. 22 on the ITA charts.
The Northwest/St. Cloud winner will face the victor of the 3 p.m. match between Emporia and Mesa State. The 2nd round will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday with the winner earning a trip to the 24th annual NCAA Division II National Tournament in Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. May 11-14.
