Bearcats drop weekend finale to Truman StateBox Score
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball team fell to the Truman State Bulldogs, 81-77, on the final day of the Comfort Inn/Drury Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday at the O’Reilly Event Center in Springfield, Mo. Northwest falls to 4-4 on the season while Truman State improved to 4-0.
Northwest was led by Dillon Starzl, who scored 18 points on 9-for-11 shooting. Starzl had a blocked shot and a steal. DeShaun Cooper scored 17 points with four assists. He was 8-for-12 from the charity stripe. Also scoring in double-figures were Zach Schneider with 12, Grant Cozad with 11 and Tyler Funk with 10.
As a team, Northwest shot 51 percent from the field (25-for-49), and were 21-for-29 from the free throw line (72.4%). The Bearcats outrebounded the Bulldogs, 27-24, and forced 10 turnovers.
Down by one early, 9-8, Northwest went on a 26-8 run to take a 34-17 lead with 7:13 left in the first half. Truman would battle back and cut the Bearcat lead to just four as the Bulldogs finished the half on a 17-4 run, trailing 38-34.
After a Bryston Williams steal and layup to open the second half, Truman State would score the next 12 points to take a lead that the Bulldogs would hold on to until the 5:37 mark when a Starzl jumper tied the game at 61-61. But Truman State went on another run, scoring 16 of the next 24 points to open up an eight-point lead, 77-69 with 31 seconds to go. Cooper would hit a three with 10 seconds left to bring it to within two, 79-77, but Truman hit two free throws to put the game out of reach.
The Bearcats will host Pittsburg State on Thursday, Dec. 5, at Bearcat Arena in the MIAA opener for both teams. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., following the women’s basketball game against the Gorillas. Northwest’s’ Dec. 7 game against Emporia State at Bearcat Arena has been scheduled for 7:30 p.m., due to the hosting of the NCAA football quarterfinals at noon at Bearcat Stadium.
