Cooper and Starzl hit career marks in victory

Box Score

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Make it 10 straight wins for the Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball team as the Bearcats defeated Lincoln University Saturday, 97-78.

The Bearcats came out on fire in the first half, shooting 52 percent from the floor as they jumped out to an early lead.

DeShaun Cooper led all scorers in the first half with 15 points.

Early in the second half, Dillon Starzl put in his 1,000th career point three years, two months and 25 days after scoring his first bucket as a Bearcat.

“I was never really worried about it,” Starzl said on scoring his 1,000th point. “I was more concerned with winning the game. It’s a great accomplishment, I have loved my time here at Northwest, but I just need to keep contributing to the team’s success this season.”

The Blue Tigers kept the game close in the beginning of the second half trailing, at one point, by three. Northwest then turned on the offense and began to pull away.

Cooper had his second 30 point performance of the season, finishing with a career high 35 points.

Starzl finished the game with 14 points while pulling down three rebounds. Conner Crooker had 11 points while Grant Cozad had 10. Bryston Williams had 10 points with four assists and three steals.

The 10 game winning streak is the longest under head coach Ben McCollum. Northwest improved to 18-5 on the season and 13-1 in the MIAA. The Bearcats will head to Missouri Southern to take on the Lions Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
