Cooper nets 23 as Northwest wins ninth straight

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State never trailed on Wednesday night at Bearcat Arena, defeating Missouri Western, 92-64, behind a 23 point performance from DeShaun Cooper. Four other Bearcats reached double figures as Northwest improved to 17-5 on the season and 12-1 in MIAA play. The win was also the ninth-straight victory for the Bearcats. Missouri Western falls to 9-12 on the season and 4-9 in conference play.

Cooper hit three three-pointers to lead all scorers with 23. Dillon Starzl scored 14 and is now eight points away from 1,000 for his career. He also had a game-high eight rebounds. Grant Cozad came off the bench to score 12 points, including going a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Kyle Schlake hit all three of his field goal attempts and all four free throw attempts to finish with 10 points. Bryston Williams also added 10 points for the Bearcats.

Northwest jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first half. Missouri Western would keep the lead to single digits until the 8:15 mark when the Bearcats went on a 16-8 run to close the half, leading 45-28. It was more of the same in the second half as Northwest would push the lead to 34 points, 87-53, with 3:15 left in the contest. For the game, the Bearcats shot 56.6 percent from the field, going 30-for-53. Northwest held a 36-25 edge in rebounding and only committed eight turnovers on the evening. Defensively, Missouri Western was held to just 38.9 percent shooting (21-for-54) and was just 7-for-19 from beyond the arc (36.8 percent).

Northwest will head to Lincoln on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. game against the Blue Tigers in Jefferson City, Mo. The Bearcats beat Lincoln, 92-59, on Feb. 1.

Wednesday was Northwest’s annual Pink Zone game, where all the proceeds of the contest went toward breast cancer research and the Detrixhe family. The Bearcat athletics department selected to assist Karen Detrixhe, a professor at Northwest, with her battle against breast cancer.
