MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball team embark on its final road trip of the regular season with a match up at Nebraska-Kearney Wednesday night.
The Bearcats control their own fate sitting at 10-6 in league play and in fifth place. Northwest is just one game behind Northeastern State in the standings, however, the Bearcats will jump the RiverHawks for the fourth seed and a first bye with two wins this week.
With a win over Nebraska-Kearney and a victory in the regular season finale against Truman State, the Bearcats would leap NSU and Central Oklahoma in the standings. UCO sits tied at 10-6 with Northwest in fifth, but the Bearcats also hold the tiebreaker over the Bronchos as well as the RiverHawks.
Wednesday, the Bearcats will meet up with the Lopers for only the second time in program history. The Bearcats rolled past the Lopers in December with a 90-60 win at Bearcat Arena as four players scored in double figures for Northwest.
A pair of seniors have led Northwest in their two wins that helped snap a brief three-game skid. DeAngelo Hailey has emerged to lead Northwest in both scoring and rebounding at 13.9 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Alex Sullivan is coming off a record setting night in the Bearcats win over Missouri Western. Sullivan tied the school record for three-pointers with eight and has seen his scoring average rise to 10.5 points per game.
Nebraska-Kearney snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday at Missouri Western with a 75-70 win. The Lopers are led by Jon Henderson’s 15.8 points per game, while Tyler Shields pulls in 6.8 boards per game to lead UNK in rebounding.
UNK continues to battle Missouri Western for the final spot in the MIAA Tournament, however the Lopers need two wins in their final games with some help to earn a spot in the postseason. The Lopers are 4-12 in league play and are just one game behind the Griffons who sit at 5-11 with two games left on the schedule.
Tip off from Kearney, Neb. is set for 7:30 p.m.
