MARYVILLE, Mo. – After a near two week lay-off the Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball team returns to the hardwood for a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee against Central Methodist at Bearcat Arena.
The Bearcats stand at 8-2 on the season and are eager to get back on the court after dropping their last two games before the holiday break. Northwest started the season with eight straight wins before falling to St. Edward’s and Harding at the Hawaii Classic.
With one final tune up before the Bearcats return to MIAA play - where they currently stand at 2-0 - a tough road lays ahead with only two home games during the month of January.
Leading scorer DeAngelo Hailey has worked his way into the starting lineup and leads the Bearcats averaging 15.4 points per game. Hailey was held under double figures in the loss to St. Edward’s for only the second time this season, but returned with a 24 point effort in the loss to Harding.
Dillon Starzl is averaging 13.6 points per game and pulling in 5.8 rebounds per contest to lead Northwest. The junior post has gotten help on the glass from Kyle Schlake who averages 5.5 rebounds per game, as the Bearcats have out-rebounded their opponents by an average of 5.9 boards per game.
Central Methodist also enters Saturday’s contest on a two-game skid, after falling to NAIA sixth-ranked Columbia College before the holiday break.
The Eagles are led by Melvin Tillman who averages 16.7 points per game and is shooting 42 percent from behind the three-point line. Elliot Black leads CMU in rebounding at 6.2 boards per game and also averages in double figures at 13.5 points per game.
Northwest returns to MIAA play at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 3 against Missouri Southern before a nationally televised game Jan. 5 at Pittsburg State. The matchup between the Bearcats and Gorillas can be seen on CBS Sports Network, which is available to most cable providers. Tip for the women’s game is set for 11:30 a.m. with the men’s game to follow.
