MARYVILLE, Mo. – Not only will Saturday’s game be the first MIAA meeting for the Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball team and Nebraska-Kearney, it will be the first ever meeting between the two schools on the hardwood.

The Bearcats are coming off an exciting 73-66 overtime win against Lindenwood in the conference opener for both teams. Northwest hit six free-throws in the final minute of the extra period to ice the game as Alex Sullivan and DeAngelo Hailey led the Bearcats with 18 points each.

Northwest has continued its tough defensive play, holding opponents to just 40 percent from the field on the season. Limiting their opponent’s second-chance opportunities has also been key for the Bearcats as they have outrebounded their opponents 126-96 in the last three games.

Offensively, a trio of Bearcats all average more than 15 points per game led by Alex Sullivan, DeAngelo Hailey and Dillon Starzl. Sullivan has been solid on the outside shooting an impressive 52 percent from behind the three-point line as Hailey stands at 35 percent.

Starzl continues to be a force inside the paint, picking up the slack left by the graduation of Jake Reinders. Averaging six rebounds per game, Starzl has seen his field goal percentage rise to 59 percent from the field.

Helping setup the Bearcat offense, sophomore guard Matt Wallace ranks in the top five of the league averaging 4.7 assists per game. Wallace has done his part running the offense with a 2.5 assist/turnover ratio, the fourth best mark in the MIAA.

The Lopers enter their first MIAA season on a struggling note falling to Lincoln 72-61 earlier in the week. Playing a heavy road schedule to open the season, UNK hold a 1-3 record in away games this season and are 2-4 overall.

UNK is led by senior guard Jon Henderson who is averaging 18 points per game and has also been impressive from behind the three-point line at 44 percent.

Action from Bearcat Arena is set for 3:30 p.m. following the women’s game at 1:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite Bearcat holiday attire to celebrate Christmas in the ‘Ville. Northwest students will again have a chance to win $100 from Bearcat Athletics and U.S. Bank. (Students must be present to win.)
