Northwest Bearcats

Press Release

Feb. 15, 2012

Northwest opens at No. 4 in first region rankings

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats received favorable news on Wednesday as they debuted at No. 4 in the first NCAA Region Rankings as announced by the organization.

The Bearcats stand at 15-3 in Division II play, as the regional rankings do not take into consideration non-NCAA Division II opponents. Northwest is 19-3 overall.

The top eight teams in the South Central Region earn bids to the NCAA tournament as do the postseason tournament champions from the MIAA, Lone Star, and Heartland conferences. Although teams from the Great American Conference are part of the South Central Region, the new conference does not receive an automatic bid, but may earn an at-large bid if ranked in the top eight of the final rankings.

Tarleton State earned the No. 1 seed in the first rankings just ahead of Midwestern State at No. 2; however, the Mustangs knocked off the Texans on Monday in a triple overtime thriller that did not factor into this week’s ranking.

Just ahead of the Bearcats at No. 3 is Arkansas Tech. As the Bearcats check in at No. 4, Washburn follows the Bearcats at No. 5 with Missouri Southern at No. 6 and Central Missouri at No. 7.

At No. 8 is LSC foe West Texas-A&M followed by Incarnate Word at No. 9 and Fort Hays State rounding out the top 10.

The regional rankings are released every Wednesday afternoon after 4 p.m. Eastern time and will be done weekly through Feb. 29.
