#22 Bearcats face Blue Tigers Wednesday
MARYVILLE, Mo. – After clinching its first postseason berth in three seasons, the Northwest Missouri State men’s basketball team returns home to host Lincoln University in MIAA action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Bearcat Arena.
The Bearcats earned their first berth in the MIAA tournament under head coach Ben McCollum with a 78-74 win at Pittsburg State Saturday night. Northwest also improved to 17-3 on the year and sits half a game behind Central Missouri for the top spot in the league at 11-3.
With six games remaining for the Bearcats, three other teams have clinched a spot in March’s MIAA tournament including Missouri Southern and Washburn along with the Mules. The remaining three weeks of the schedule boast well for the Bearcats as they host four of their final six games. Included in those four games are rematches with Central Missouri on Feb. 18 and the regular season finale against Missouri Southern Feb. 25.
Wednesday, the Bearcats will look for their 11th consecutive win over the Blue Tigers and a regular season sweep after an 80-62 win in Jefferson City in December.
Northwest remains the league’s top defensive team holding opponents under 60 points per game and boast the MIAA’s top two free throw shooters, DeShaun Cooper and Bryston Williams. In Saturday’s win at Pittsburg State, Cooper went 11-of-13 from the free throw line and knocked down five of his final six in the last minute of the game.
Cooper also leads Northwest in scoring averaging 13 points per game.
Cedric Ridle leads the Blue Tigers in scoring with 17.2 points per game. Ridle entered the Blue Tigers starting lineup in late December and also leads the team in rebounds (7.0) and steals (2.3).
The Bearcats will continue their home stretch this weekend as they play host to Missouri Western at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Bearcat Arena.
