Northwest basketball courts receive facelifts

By Maggie Corwin '12

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Lamkin Activity Center and Martindale Gym are getting a new look this summer. Both gyms are undergoing full-floor replacements, a project long overdue. Numerous dead spots in the 60-plus-year-old Lamkin floor and an additional 20 years of use in Martindale made both gyms an increasing liability risk to the athletes.

The length of durability of gym floors decreases with the general wear and tear that street shoes cause. Even black-soled shoes that appear clean can damage and reduce the longevity. To help prevent this, the athletic department is looking into purchasing a floor cover with additional padding compared to the tarpaulin used currently. After the new installation, efforts will be increased to keep street shoes from walking on the floor.

Maplewood will be used to make up the gym floor, one of the best options available and meant to last longer and have better endurance. The floor should be laid by the end of May 20. Once that is completed, it will be stripped, painted and layered with finish. Lastly, holes will be drilled for the volleyball posts and control boxes. A second control box is going to be installed on the west side of the gym. This will provide Lamkin with an additional option for controlling the sound system, scoreboard and P.A. system.  This will decrease the need for extension cords and mats while also looking to the future for any layout changes.

The new paint job is going back to a more "old school" design. The only solid paint will be on the north and south baselines, where before it was on all four sidelines. Solid paint needs increase maintenance due to the increased likelihood of chipping and damage. The north and south baselines will read "Bearcats" while the west sideline will sport "Northwest". Now, the Bearcat paw will take place of the "N" that once graced Lamkin's midcourt. A layout with the complete design of the new floor plan can be found in the attached album.
