Bearcats sign junior college All-American

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State head men's basketball coach Ben McCollum announced the signing of junior college transfer DeAngelo Hailey to a national letter of intent to play basketball for the Bearcats next season. Hailey comes to Northwest from Kankakee Community College in Illinois.

Hailey, a 6-3 guard, was an NJCAA All-American last season and the Region Four Championship's Most Valuable Player. He averaged 15.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game at Kankakee and ranked in the top 25 nationally with 92 steals during his senior season.

Hailey reached double figures in 27 games last season in leading the Cavaliers to a 30-4 record and the program's second-consecutive Region Four title. Kankakee was ranked as high as second in the nation and finished eighth in the final NFCAA Poll.

"DeAngelo was a pure joy to coach," said Kankakee head coach Joe Lightfoot.  "He made things very easy for me. When you have a talent like DeAngelo you just put him in the right situation on the floor and allow his ability to do the rest."

Prior to arriving at Kankakee, Hailey was named Detroit Public League's Most Valuable Player as a senior at Detroit Central High School in Michigan.

"We could not be more excited to have DeAngelo joining our family," said McCollum. "He has been very loyal to us through the recruiting process and that means a lot. DeAngelo is very athletic and he is a phenomenal defender. His stats obviously show how good he is offensively. He will be a tough matchup because of his quickness and his ability to shoot. We also love his unselfishness and how great of a kid he is. He is a special player."

The Bearcats, who finished the regular season winning six of their last nine, will open the 2011-12 campaign with an exhibition game against the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City Nov. 6.
