Bearcats win in thrilling fashion
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State forward Elijah Allen scored a game-high 19 points including the go-ahead bucket with 1:10 remaining to lead the Bearcats to a 59-56 win against Lincoln Wednesday at Jason Gym. Northwest (7-14, 5-12 MIAA) has won three of its last four.
The Bearcats led by 14 points in the first half and 11 points at halftime, but trailed by three, 54-51, with five minutes to go. Lincoln (2-19, 0-17 MIAA) scored two points down the stretch and was held scoreless during the final four minutes to remain winless in MIAA play.
Northwest point guard DeShaun Cooper scored 12 points and Jake Reinders added seven points and six rebounds before securing the win by blocking Pierre DeClue's three-point attempt on Lincoln's final possession. DeClue, the Tigers' leading scorer this season, had nine points Wednesday.
Northwest outscored Lincoln 11-2 at the free-throw line but missed 13 free throws on the night. Lincoln made up the deficit by hitting eight 3-pointers, three by Eric Gentle II who led Lincoln with 11 points.
The win keeps the Bearcats' hopes alive in securing a spot in the MIAA tournament. Northwest returns to the court Saturday against Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo.
