Petersen, Cooper shine but Bearcats fall to Lions
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Jason Adams scored 23 points and Keane Thomann and Skyler Bowlin added 20 points each to lead 22nd-ranked Missouri Southern to a 91-79 win against Northwest Missouri State Monday at Bearcat Arena.
It's the third time the Lions (14-1, 10-1 MIAA) have topped 90 points during their current five-game win streak. The win gives Missouri Southern a 1 ½ game lead over Fort Hays State for first place in the MIAA standings as the teams hit the midway point.
Northwest (4-11, 2-9 MIAA) got career highs from DeShaun Cooper and Jake Peterson but lost its fourth in a row. Cooper scored 29 points on 13 of 19 shooting and tied his career high with nine assists. Peterson made four 3-pointers on his way to 22 points. He had scored 18 points in seven games played entering Monday's contest.
Missouri Southern shot 60 percent from the field (31 of 52) and made 25 of 32 free throws. The Bearcats shot 68 percent in the second half, but were still outscored 50-48 in the period.
Bowlin scored 13 first-half points including a 25-foot 3-pointer on the final possession of the first half. The Lions took a 41-31 lead into the break.
Missouri Southern led 59-40 five minutes into the second half, but saw its lead cut to six, 68-62, following a Cooper trey with seven minutes remaining. The Lions scored the game's next six points and maintained a lead of at least nine the rest of the way.
