Truman stops Northwest in Kirksville
Alex Henderson scored 19 points, Vesko Filchev added 18 and Ethan Freeman finished three points shy of a triple-double as Truman handed Northwest its worst loss of the season, 73-58, in an MIAA contest at Pershing Arena Saturday night. Both teams are 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the league.
Truman outscored Northwest 17-2 during the final seven minutes of the first half to turn a 20-14 deficit into a 31-22 halftime lead. The Bulldogs then scored six of the first eight points of the second half and trailed by no fewer than eight points the rest of the way.
Henderson scored 16 second-half points after he and Freeman, Truman's top scorers, were held to three points each in the first half. Freeman finished with 15 rebounds and 10 assists to go with seven points.
Northwest was riding high from its best win of the season, a 75-63 victory against rival-Missouri Western Wednesday night, and built a six-point lead thanks to junior guard Shaneel Narayan's fast start. Narayan matched Truman point-for-point for 11 minutes and scored 13 of Northwest's first 16 points.
When Narayan stopped scoring, so did the Bearcats.
Besides Narayan's 13 points in the first half, Northwest got seven points from Jake Reinders and two from DeShaun Cooper. Leading scorer Elijah Allen picked up two fouls in the game's first five minutes and sat the rest of the half. Northwest committed 10 first-half turnovers after going error-free for 25 minutes to start the Missouri Western game.
Allen scored 14 second-half points and Narayan finished with 22 to lead the Bearcats.
