Ninth-ranked Tigers survive Bearcat rally

Box Score

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Fort Hays State guard Corbin Kuntzsch hit a game-winning, three-point shot with two seconds remaining to lift the ninth-ranked Tigers to a 71-68 win against Northwest Missouri State Saturday night at Bearcat Arena.

Northwest (2-7, 0-5 MIAA) trailed by 17 points with less than nine minutes to play, but rallied back and took a 66-65 lead on a three-point play by Elijah Allen with 1:10 remaining. Allen led all scorers with 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his third double-double in his last four games.

Dominique Jones hit a deep 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down that allowed the Tigers (10-1, 4-1 MIAA) to regain the lead, 68-66, with 41 seconds left. DeShaun Cooper answered with a driving layup on the end to knot the game at 68.

Jones held the ball near midcourt for the final shot. He then drove to the hoop and kicked out to Kuntzsch, who drilled the wide-open look from the right wing. Kuntzsch was 4-for-6 from long range in the contest and led the Tigers with 18 points.

Fort Hays State led 35-24 at the half, but Allen was the story in the first 20 minutes. He scored Northwest's first 17 points of the game on 7-of-11 shooting. His teammates, meanwhile, combined to miss their first 13 shots. A Dillon Starzl score in the paint with 2:20 remaining in the first half ended Allen's string of points.

An intriguing matchup of point guards was delayed until the second half. Cooper scored 10 of his 12 points during the Bearcats' 27-9 run that led to the one-point lead. He also dished out eight assists. His counterpart, Jones, scored 12 of his 14 points in the second frame and finished with six assists.
