Midnight Madness Thursday

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Misssouri State's annual Midnight Madness event to tip-off the 2010-11 basketball season starts at 10 p.m. Thursday inside Bearcat Arena. Admission is free and Bearcat fans will have the opportunity to meet the players and coaches of the men's and women's basketball teams.

The event begins with food and music for Bearcat fans. The Bearcat bookstore will also be there to sell Northwest apparel. The formal program will begin at 10:30 p.m. and feature performances by the Bearcat Steppers and cheerleaders. After the introduction of the men's and women's teams, comes the highlight of the night.  Both teams will have a dance competition and the winner will be determined by the fans. The women's team has won the past two years.

The evening will also include promotional giveaways, raffles and contests for fans to participate. The evening will conclude with a skills competition by the women's team followed by a slam-dunk contest by the men.

The Northwest men are coached by Ben McCollum who enters his second season at the helm of the Bearcats. The men return seven players, three of whom are starters off of last year's squad. In addition Northwest returns MIAA Freshman of the Year, DeShaun Cooper, who set a Northwest freshman record with 107 assists last season.

The Bearcat women return 13 players from last season including all five starters from a year ago and All-MIAA performers Gentry Dietz and Abby Henry. The women are coached by Gene Steinmeyer who will begin his 12th season.
