Cooper Named MIAA Freshman of the Year
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State freshman guard DeShaun Cooper has been named MIAA Freshman of the Year as voted on by the league's head men's basketball coaches. Cooper is the third Northwest player to receive the award and the second in four seasons.
Cooper is one of four Bearcats to play in all 27 games this past season. He was Northwest's third-leading scorer at 10.7 points per game, led the Bearcats with 39 steals and had a freshmen-record 107 assists.
Cooper scored more than 20 points three times including a season-best 23-point effort against Southwest Baptist on Jan. 16. He had a season-high nine assists in his first collegiate game back in November.
Northwest failed to have an All-MIAA honoree for the first time since 2005 and for the second time in the last 13 seasons. Junior forward Elijah Allen was honorable mention despite being one of three players in the league to rank in the top 10 in scoring (fourth, 17.5 ppg), rebounding (seventh, 6.8 rpg) and field goal percentage (fifth, .514). Allen also ranked eighth in the league in blocked shots.
