Slow Start Stops Northwest
TOPEKA, Kan.-Washburn guard William McNeill scored 20 points and De'Andre Washington added 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Ichabods to a 78-62 win against Northwest Missouri State Wednesday at Lee Arena. The win avenges an early December loss to the Bearcats in Maryville.
Elijah Allen led Northwest with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting. It's the eighth 20-point performance by Allen this season and 12th of his career. Edriss Floyd made four three-pointers and finished with 16 points. Girod Adams, in a return to his hometown of Topeka, had 13 points and three assists.
Northwest scored a season-low 21 points the first half and never recovered from an 18-point halftime deficit. McNeill and Washington combined for 19 first-half points. The Ichabods shot 45 percent from the field in the opening stanza while limiting Northwest to eight field goals.
Washburn committed four turnovers in the first half and 10 during the game. Northwest entered the game leading the MIAA with more than 10 steals per contest, but had a season-low three Wednesday.
Early foul trouble also plagued the Bearcats, who saw three players make early exits. Washburn capitalized with 26 points from the charity stripe on 35 attempts. Northwest was 17-of-22 from the line.¬
