Consecutive String of Tournaments Comes to an End
JOPLIN, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State senior Hunter Henry scored 21 points in his final game as a Bearcat, but it was Missouri Southern that came away with an 85-69 win Saturday at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
DaRell Crittendon scored a game-high 22 points to lead a balanced Missouri Southern attack and to clinch the final MIAA tournament bid. Northwest would've had a chance to defend last year's tournament title with the win, but will sit out the event for the first time in 18 years.
Henry passed Joe Hurst for fifth place on Northwest's all-time scoring list before seeing his career come to an end. He finished with 1,592 points after recording his 28th career 20-point game.
Missouri Southern (19-11, 9-11 MIAA) made nearly half its shots, scored 20 points off Northwest turnovers and made 22-of-28 free throws. Mariun Price and Jason Adams scored 16 points each. Matt Monroe and Vincent Ateba added 10 points each.
Northwest scored the first two points of the game on a Henry jumper, but trailed the rest of the way. The Bearcats were 1-of-13 from behind the arc. Northwest made six three-pointers in its final three games, contests the team trailed from nearly start-to-finish. Opponents made more than twice as many three-pointers than the Bearcats in MIAA play (163-80).
Missouri Southern led 35-30 at halftime, but doubled its lead before reaching the first media timeout of the second half.
Henry scored eight straight Northwest points before Mike Larsen made the Bearcats' only three-pointer to trim the lead to 52-48 near the 10-minute mark. The Lions score the next nine points - seven from the charity stripe - and on nine consecutive possessions to put the game away. When they finally had an empty possession, the score was 78-67 with less than three minutes to play.
Elijah Allen finished with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting for Northwest. Shawn Carter made 4-of-8 shots and finished with 10.
